Hello! We are the Parkinsons, a worldschooling family currently based in western North Dakota.
Justin ~ One of my greatest sources of entertainment is watching Justin squirm when people say to him, “Where are you from?” It’s a strange question, right? Do you mean to ask where I live now? Where my accent comes from? Something else? Justin was born in Canada, where his Kiwi parents were on a hippie road trip (my words, not his) following a racing circuit. He spent his first year of life rambling across Canada and the U.S., planting the seed of a traveler which would stick with him throughout life. When he was XXX, they returned to New Zealand, where he grew up surrounded by a big, amazing Kiwi family. In XXXX, he set out to have an adventure, moving to Canada.
While he was in Canada, he met me!
Crysta ~ I was born and raised in western Washington, where travel meant a road trip to see my grandparents in Montana or Oregon – the sort of trip where Dad drives all night because it’s easier to deal with the kids if you can go straight through. From very early on I knew I wanted to be a writer, and went with journalism in college because I didn’t want to eat microwaved noodles for the rest of my life. I worked my way through daily and weekly newspapers as a reporter and editor before settling in as a stay-at-home mom and full-time freelance writer in 2008. I have restless bones, and can always be relied on to have plans for our next trip in a notebook on my person.
The rest of the family ~ We have a great big “his, hers, and ours” family, but are sort of straddling an empty nest at this point, with five of our six children off seeking their own fortunes and creating their own futures. That is an emotional statement, but a positive one. Our world is better for having each of them in it, we have learned so much from them, and we are proud!
Bria ~ That leaves the baby of the family, the “ours” in the above equation. She is our 8-year-old travel companion, a creative force to be reckoned with. This young lady is the catalyst that brought us to the philosophy of worldschooling. She is definitely more worldly than most adults we know, and we love that about her. She is a curious explorer, always eager to see what the world has to offer. Bria has made friends from all over the world, and wishes she were a better pen pal. She loves animals, history, and meandering road trips.
We are pleased you are here, and encourage you to take part in our community and share your travels with us! Welcome to our travel blog!
