10 Essential Oils We Don’t Travel Without

Essential oils have had a huge impact on our family, and when we are home, we use essential oils to support our family’s health and well-being. So of course traveling is no different! But what oils to bring with us on the road?

We have battled with this list for years, getting caught out without an oil we wished we had on a long trip, or bringing along more things than we needed (I used to travel with a padded bag that holds 64 bottles). This list of the 10 oils we always have in our travel bag is the culmination of lots of trial and error, and is the one that works best for us!

Which oils are on your list? What would you add or take away? Let us know in the comments!

Note: Many of these oils are blends. To learn the ingredients or learn more, please click on the links to go to the information page for each oil.

doTERRA On Guard essential oilOn Guard

For us, any list of must have essential oils begins with doTERRA On Guard. This oil is the one that started our journey with oils, and it is the one that members of our family use most often.

On Guard supports a healthy immune system and protects against environmental threats by supporting the body’s natural defenses. If you have kids, you know every germ on the planet is magically attracted to your crew, so this one is a great way to put up a barrier.

This one is also awesome for non-toxic cleaning of surfaces, which is super nice to have on hand when you are moving from place to place. I love knowing I have something in my bag that can help when I come across an “iffy” situation, be it a hotel lobby, airport, or play equipment.

On Guard also helps to purify the air when used in a diffuser, which comes in handy when everyone needs a little pick-me-up as we battle jet lag.

BreathedoTERRA Breathe Essential Oil

When doTERRA says Breathe, they mean it! This blend maintains feelings of clear airways and easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal and environmental threats. It can be applied topically to the chest and throat, back, or bottom of feet, and diffused at nighttime to promote a restful sleep when the cards are stacked against you.

This one earns a place in our bag because travel seems to inevitably lead to respiratory distress for someone in the family, and I hate to be caught out. This article from University Health says we are not alone – apparently 20 percent of people develop symptoms of the common cold following air travel. A little extra support goes a long way.

Deep Blue

A long day of walking followed by a soothing massage with Deep Blue is basically half of the days on most of our trips!

This blend is great for supporting the body after exercise, lifting, or when dealing with the effects of tension. It is also great for supporting growing kids’ legs at bedtime. The soothing power of this blend is a real lifesaver when it comes to waking up ready to take on a new day.

Balance

The warm, woody aroma of doTERRA Balance creates a sense of calm and well-being – every parent needs THAT in their toolbox. We love to blend it with Wild Orange to create a blend we call “Happy Oil” and use to support our daughter any time she has anxious feelings.

Wild Orange

Cold pressed from the peel, Wild Orange is one of doTERRA’s top selling essential oils due to its energizing aroma and multiple health benefits. Wild Orange has lots of uses! I love to put it in water to add a burst of flavor and promote overall health, along with taking advantage of its cleansing properties. We are also sure to bring along Wild Orange because it is a favorite ingredient in the “Happy Oil” mentioned above.

For an energizing boost, put a drop or two in the palm of your hand, rub your palms together and inhale deeply. Voila!

doTERRA Serenity essential oilSerenity (or Lavender)

We use Serenity in place of Lavender essential oil in many situations when we travel because Lavender is one of the ingredients, and we really love this perfectly balanced, tranquil blend. But if you prefer to stick with the classics, this is where it would belong!

The newly updated doTERRA Serenity Restful Blend is great for calming a restless baby or child (yes, that baby on the plane), can lessen tension, and really goes a long way to promote a good night’s sleep.

Travel messes with your body clock, and Serenity is just the thing to help you get back on track.

In addition, we use it in place of lavender for its calming properties, both emotional and physical – when it comes to sensitive skin reactions, this is a favorite.

Aromatouch

This is a recent addition to our bag. I use Aromatouch behind my ears (and my daughter’s) to support our sensitive ears during takeoff and landing on an airplane. The relaxing and comforting effects also make it a popular blend for massages and producing a whole body wellness experience, which we love.

Digestzen

We are a family that cannot travel without some tools for taking care of tummies! DigestZen is well known for its ability to aid in digestion, soothe occasional stomach upset, and maintain overall digestive health, and we are big fans.

What else can I say? This stuff rocks.

Terrashield

Two words: no bugs. Terrashield offers protection against pests, so it’s a must-have on any outdoorsy trip.

How does it work? When it comes to outdoor protection, no defense is better than what Mother Nature has to offer. Among these are essential oils which provide a vapor barrier for plants, protecting them from potential threats in their environment. TerraShield Outdoor Blend contains powerful essential oils and other plant oils known to provide outdoor protection in a natural, safe way.

And here’s an added benefit – the recent addition of Tamanu oil provides added support, and through doTERRA’s amazing Co-Impact Sourcing programs, the harvesting of Tamanu oil is positively impacting the livelihood of harvesters in the beautiful country of Madagascar.

To use, apply it to your skin or clothes, as well as your door, window seals, and tent.

Purify

Purify is an exclusive combination of essential oils that purify and eradicate odors in a natural, safe way. Purify contains Lemon, Lime, and Pine essential oils, known for their powerful cleaning properties, along with Siberian and Austrian Firs to purify the air and protect against environmental threats.

Sometimes travel means funky smells. Purify is a combination of essential oils that purify and eradicate those odors in a natural, safe way. I like to diffuse it when we first arrive in a new AirBNB to cleanse the air and give the space a familiar aroma.

Mix things up by adding a drop of Wild Orange to the mix, as well.

I also add this one to our laundry, which helps to eliminate odors on our clothes, and use it topically to help pull the itchy feeling out of a bug bite.

Essential Oil Bag

Storage

I keep my travel kit in this cute little purple bag from Dani’s Designs, a gift from one of my amazing leaders a few years ago. It has mesh pouches to keep the oils snugly in place, and does a good job of keeping everything safely organized.

  1. I’ve never used Doterra’s essential oils before so I really appreciate reading this review. How many oils would you recommend starting with?

    1. crysta

Hi Jocelyn! I recommend starting with one of the kits, because it is a simple way to get started using oils, and is more cost effective. There are kits for every budget, but my favorite is the Natural Solutions Kit! It is the one I started with, and allows you to make changes to natural products in several areas of your life. For a more modest budget, I would check out the Family Essentials kit, which offers the 10 most popular doTERRA oils at a great price.

  2. Thanks for sharing this! Is the Terrashield safe for kids and toddlers? When we traveled to Mexico last year, my daughter got bit by something and her whole eye was swollen up! The poor thing. The only thing that helped was aloe straight from the plant but I’d really like to be more prepared next time!

Oh, the poor sweet dear! Yes, Terrashield is safe for babies and toddlers! It is important to dilute oils when using them on little people, but that doesn’t change how well they work. Here is a post on the doTERRA page with more information on this oil’s safety and ingredients: https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/spotlight-terrashield-outdoor-blend

  3. I’ve been wanting to try essential oils. What should I start with? Thanks for sharing!
